PROCESS BREAKDOWN

I first created vectors for the sparkles and face in Adobe Illustrator.

 
 
 
 

Then, to add a little illustrative squash/stretch, animated in After Effects.

 
 

I separated the face animation into eyebrows, eyelashes, shadow, eye, eye color 1, eye color 2, eye sparkles, iris ring, lips, moon/stars, mouth, nose, pupil, and teeth. I rendered each face component and sparkle into the following flipbooks.

I made materials for each face component/sparkle. Then, I applied each material to particle systems using texture sheet animation to allow easy color customization.

Set up a burst effect and added our animated sparkles. After trying a few color options, I chose a green palette instead of blue for the overall effect. But! This is just one instance of the effect, the control exists to edit color for the sparkles and each detail of the face.

Finally, I used Timeline to set up the effect sequence and bring everything together,
